The latest trend in developing countries is to apply castable containing preformed spinel

 
The latest trend in developing countries is to apply castable containing preformed spinel or in-situ spinel forming castable. These castable have the inherent advantage of superior erosion resistance in the sidewalls and bottom impact area of the ladle. The superior resistance is achieved owing to the presence or formation of Alumina-magnesia spinel, which restricts the penetration of molten steel into the material owing to its ability to capture MnO, CaO, FeO and forming solid solution reducing the viscosity of the slag and thus the mobility of the slag. Secondly the Al2O3-MgO phase resists the penetration of the metal into the castable matrix. The lime at high temperature simultaneously forms the high melting Ca-hexaluminate phase in the hot face, which imparts hot strength and further densification leading to improved resistance to slag and metal penetration. This material is used in combination with Magnesia-Carbon in the slag zone for prolonged and balanced wear of the ladle lining.

Castable containing preformed spinel exhibits better corrosion and slag-penetration. But the in-situ spinel forming castable has higher corrosion resistance, higher slag penetration resistance and superior thermal stress relaxation ability. The latter is preferred increasingly in ladle sidewalls and bottom especially impact area.
